Tea Time


Tea time, in my opinion, is one wonderful tradition that has unfortunately gone to the wayside in our busy modern world. It may be the saving grace to our hectic lives, our overwhelming schedules and to-do lists. To take a moment to sit down in peace with friends or associates and have mid-afternoon pick-me-up snack. Well I could go for nap time too, that may be a bit out of reach. I have found it possible and amazingly uplifting to incorporate ‘tea time’ into my daily schedule. Perhaps that is the clue – to schedule a ‘snack time’ – a few moments to breathe, to sit in the sunshine and enjoy the day with a nourishing snack, quenching our spirit with gratefulness. Gratefulness for even 15 minutes, if that is all we have, off the phone and computer for rejuvenation and replenishment.

Although tea is not required for ‘snack time’ as we may say in its absence, it is a quenching and nourishing treat for the body. Teas hot or cold are a delicious and easy way to increase fluid intake and sneak in some extra nutrients.

The benefits of Green, Black, White and Oolong Teas:

  1. Derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, a shrub native to China and India, they contain unique antioxidants called flavonoids. The most potent of these, known as ECGC, may help against free radicals that can contribute to cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries.

  2. The alkaloids, tannin, and caffeine present in tea are very quick and efficient natural stimulants. Drinking tea gives immediate relief for fatigue, stimulates the brain, and elevates mood. They also stimulate the metabolism and aid in digestion.

  3. These alkaloids are powerful disinfectants and have high antimicrobial, antiviral, and germicidal properties. They antioxidants are wonderful for skin and anti-aging.

  4. Teas assist in boosting the immune system and relaxing allergies.

Herbal Teas (Chamomile, Peppermint, Orange Spice, etc)

Made from herbs, fruits, seeds, or roots steeped in hot water, herbal teas have lower concentrations of antioxidants than green, white, black, and oolong teas. Their chemical compositions vary widely depending on the plant used.

Based upon the plant you may find flavorful teas that

  1. assist with allergies

  2. settle the stomach

  3. aid digestion

  4. increase immune systems

  5. relieve circulatory troubles (colds, flu, congestion)

Add honey to your tea instead of sugar to:

  1. boost immune system

  2. antimicrobial

  3. assist with allergies

While you are having tea or snack time, remember to incorporate healthy, sustainable snacks that are light on the stomach yet boost your energy for the remainder of the day.

  1. Apples and Peanut Butter, or Celery and Peanut Butter

  2. Nutella is great on anything and everything – put out a container of nutella with fresh fruits like Bananas, Apples, Strawberries, etc

  3. Crackers and Cheese (you can experiment with different cheeses to add some adventure)

  4. Trail Mix is a great afternoon boosters as it incorporates fruits, nuts, and chocolate for ultimate carbs and proteins

  5. Granola – great with yogurt, dip a banana in it, warm it with some milk for carb/protein booster, or eat it plain like trail mix

  6. Cookies – peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, or a trail mix cookie recommended for lasting sugar boost

  7. Muffins, Scones, or Danish treats

  8. Sandwiches – easy PB&J or gourmet, consider paninis if you have time to make them fresh

  9. Chips, Salsa and Guacamole
